The Virtue of Knowledge (Ilm) The Karamat (Miracles) of the Scholars (Part 3)
Imam Nawawi (RA) said that actions related to knowledge are among the most श्रेष्ठ (excellent) forms of عبادات (worship). However, this does not mean that knowledge alone is sufficient without practicing deeds. That is clearly a mistake. At the very least, people of knowledge should not neglect important acts of worship, including the emphasized Sunnah prayers and regular adhkār (daily devotions). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Doing a little with knowledge is beneficial, whereas doing a lot without knowledge brings no benefit.” (Rūḥ al-Bayān 5/500) Some people measure the status of the righteous based on karāmāt (miraculous acts). This is a misunderstanding. Manifest miracles such as revealing unseen matters or curing illnesses are generally rare among scholars. Even today, the continuous and unbroken legacy of religious knowledge itself is the greatest karāmah of our Imams and scholars. There is no greater miracle than steadfastness (istiqāmah) — being constant in good deeds and staying away from sins. Imam Nawawi (RA) also said: “Although scholars are superior to many Sufis, their karāmāt are often not made apparent, in order to protect them from showing off.” (Bughyat al-Mustarshidīn 5) To be continued, In sha Allah… And Allah knows best.
